Areal Flood Watch, Coastal Flood Advisory, Coastal Flood Watch
Issued by the National Weather Service at 9:50 PM EST on March 12, 2010

... Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday evening...

The Flood Watch continues for

* the Washington and Baltimore metropolitan areas... north-central
and western Maryland... lower southern Maryland... eastern West
Virginia... and northern and central Virginia

* through Sunday evening

* low pressure will bring periods of rain through Saturday night.
The heaviest rain is expected to occur overnight and Saturday.
Widespread rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches can be
expected... with locally higher amounts.

* These rainfall amounts will bring the likelihood of flooding for
small streams... creeks and urban areas overnight through
Saturday. Additionally... minor to moderate flooding of feeder
creeks and streams of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers is
likely to start late tonight and last through Sunday night.
Along the mainstem Potomac River... moderate flooding is likely
to start Saturday at Paw Paw... Harpers Ferry... Point of Rocks
and Little Falls... and last through Sunday night. Along the
mainstem Shenandoah River... moderate flooding is likely at and
downstream of Millville.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

Monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings.
Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to
take action should flooding develop.

... Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 6 am EST
Saturday...
... Coastal Flood Watch remains in effect from 6 am EST Saturday
through Saturday afternoon...

A coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 6 am EST
Saturday. A coastal Flood Watch remains in effect from 6 am EST
Saturday through Saturday afternoon.

Easterly winds will continue to increase overnight causing tidal
anomalies to increase up to two feet above normal. The increased
tidal anomalies will combine with the new moon... causing water
levels to approach thresholds for minor coastal flooding near
times of high tide overnight.

Strong easterly winds will persist through Saturday causing tidal
anomalies to continue increasing. The increasing tidal anomalies
combined with the lunar cycle will bring the potential for
moderate flooding near times of high tide. High water levels in
the Potomac due to heavy rain will enhance the threat for coastal
flooding across the upper tidal Potomac River Saturday afternoon
and possibly into early next week.

Emergency managers and people with interest on the Potomac River
and the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay should begin to
prepare for potential coastal flooding.

Here are the times of the next high tides
for a few locations from north to south...
on the Chesapeake Bay...
Havre de Grace... 8:00 am and 8:51 PM...
Fort McHenry Baltimore... 4:47 am and 5:38 PM...
Annapolis U.S. Naval Academy... 3:17 am and 4:08 PM...
Solomons Island... 12:09 am and 1:00 PM...
Point Lookout... 11:19 PM and 12:10 PM...

Now along the Potomac River...
Alexandria... 6:46 am and 7:07 PM...
Indian Head... 6:14 am and 6:35 PM...
Goose Bay... 2:20 am and 2:41 PM...
