Detailed History and Climate

Areal Flood Watch
Issued by the National Weather Service at 10:03 PM EST on March 12, 2010

... Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday evening...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of New York and northeast Pennsylvania... including the
following counties... in New York... Broome... Chemung...
Chenango... Cortland... Delaware... Otsego... Schuyler... Steuben...
Sullivan... Tioga and Tompkins. In northeast Pennsylvania...
Bradford... Lackawanna... Luzerne... northern
Wayne... Pike... southern Wayne... Susquehanna and Wyoming.

* Through Sunday evening

* rainfall totals ranging from 1 to 2 inches are expected over
central New York and northeast Pennsylvania region through late
Sunday. Locally higher amounts are possible in the upper
Delaware and Chemung river basins... where 2.5 inches could
occur. In addition to the rain... a significant contribution of
water from melting snow will continue to flow into the rivers as
daytime temperatures reach into the 40s.

* The latest river forecasts indicate the potential for several
points along the Susquehanna... Chemung and headwaters of the
upper Delaware to exceed... or come close to flood stage this
weekend. Points that may exceed minor flood stage include
Cortland... Walton... Conklin... Vestal... Waverly/Sayre and
Wilkes-Barre. Other areas on these rivers will see
significant rises to near bankfull.

In addition to river flooding... areas of heavy rain could lead to
pockets of flash flooding... mainly during Saturday night and early Sunday
when the heaviest rain is expected to fall.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is the potential for flooding on small
streams... creeks... poor drainage... urban and low-lying areas
based on current forecasts. You should monitor later forecasts
and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living... working
or driving in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take
action should flooding develop.
